Weekend Hunt In The Heat

A call from mates to be invited on a pigging trip is always welcomed, This time the call came from George to tell me that him and an old mate ( Kai ) i haven't seen in a few years had a spare seat. After getting the OK from the Mrs the next thing i new i was loading my dogs into Kai's Hilux and we were North bound.
Arriving just before lunchtime we unloaded all our gear, and got settled into camp. Being already pretty hot we decided to go for a quick drive around the property to set some Yabbie traps and get our bearings around the property.
After a lap around the property we went back to camp, cooked up a couple of snags and waited for the temperature to start to drop. With temperatures reaching over 44 degrees it wasn't worth risking our dogs health chasing pigs around.

As the sun dropped we made a plan of attack and decided to wind scent a few dams with the dogs. The dogs we have on this trip are My main dog Xena ( bullygrey x bandog) my 1 year old bull arab x pup Moose his brother Luxx and Kai's Great Dane cross Tiny.
With light disappearing quick we were off looking around all the promising spots we had seen earlier. With temperatures still sitting on 32 degrees we stayed pretty close to water for the dogs sake and knowing the pigs shouldn't be too far.
First couple of water holes we stopped the dogs seemed keen but didn't jump. Coming up to another dam that the forest backed onto the dogs on the back  (Xena and Tiny) started getting really keen. On approaching the dam Xena jumped and took off into the bush with Tiny not far behind.
We turned the car off and we soon heard the hit up and new sounded like a good pig. George let the pups out of the dog box and they V-lined straight toward the commotion with us not too far away.
As we got there I seen it was a good boar and without risking the dogs just grabbed the boar and humanly dispatched him. George only being new to pig hunting was amazed at the size of the pig and the dogs efforts to pull it up. After praising the dogs and giving them a drink we put the boar onto the rack and were off trying to find another. Unfortunately that didn't come until the following morning.
Knowing it was going to be pretty warm we with very little sleep awoke before the sun and decided to walk a section of forest that looked promising earlier.
As soon as we got there the dogs were pretty keen, we marked the Ute on the GPS and were off for a walk. Having to cross a small creek a few times we just new this area would produce a pig, what we didn't know was that Moose was already scenting behind us.
To my amazement we heard Moose let off a little bark, and a quick check of the GPS showed Moose 200m away tread quarry, with dogs running into to help the young dog we also started to run toward him.
As we got there we see another little boar getting held in place by our dogs, this one not as big as the other and only weighing just under 40kgs. I couldn't be more proud of Moose as that was his first find.
We walked for another half an hour or so but by then the sun was well and truly out by then we decided to head back to camp before it got too hot.
With temperatures showing 49 Degrees we didn't do any hunting for the rest of the day we just stayed in the lake swimming and trying our best to keep ourselves and our dogs cool and hydrated.
A quick hunt was done that night but we were all pretty buggered from the heat and decided to sleep before making our way back home in the morning.
Another hunt with not a great deal of pigs caught but we were all pretty happy with the dogs efforts and especially happy with how our young dogs are progressing.
